8 tips to help you crush your next interview

Interviews are scary. But, they don’t have to be as stressful as they often are. Use these tips before your next interview to feel confident and prepared, so you can land the job and negotiate the best terms of your employment. If you need support preparing, my 90-minute power sessions are perfect for that.

  • Set aside time to write out your skill set & unique assets. I know you have a resume, but I want you to spend some time fleshing out the traits that make you a great employee. Do you take initiative? Are you detail oriented? Emotionally intelligent? A great mentor. Make a list!

  • Write out 3-5 stories showcasing those traits in action. If one of your skills is being detail-oriented, write out a story about a time you identified an error in a project or managed a complex project with many moving parts. We can tell others our skills, but these stories help us show them in action. Having a set of these stories we want to tell helps us stay on message; when a question comes up that gives you an in to tell one of your stories, you’re ready to go.

  • Research the company and its values, then prepare a clear story about why you fit there. Find something that you can relate to in the company’s mission, and explain why you relate to it. Being excited about the company and the role makes a big difference!

  • Prepare thoughtful questions. Don’t forget that you are interviewing them, too! You can even ask at the end, “do you have any concerns or questions that would keep you from offering me this position?” It’s a little scary, sure, but gives you the chance to address their concerns head on.

  • Practice active listening and respond to the interviewer’s comments and questions with one goal: showcasing how you and your skills will bring value to this role.

  • Practice! Interviews are nerve-wracking, but they get easier when we know what we want to say, and how we want to say it. (My 90-minute intensives are great if you want support working through this)

  • Ground and do some deep breathing beforehand. Remember how much you have to offer. Confidence goes a long way.

  • Follow up with a thank you email re-emphasizing why you want the role. If you didn’t say something you wanted to, you can include that in this email, too.
